Welcome to KickstArt’s Website
KickstArt is a multi-award winning, independent, professional theatre company committed to maintaining the highest possible standard of theatre production in Durban for the benefit of audiences and theatre practioners alike.
The company’s primary objective is to produce the best of internationally recognised drama, and to that end it has staged plays by widely celebrated playwrights such as Oscar Wilde, David Mamet, Ben Elton, Charles Ludlam, Athol Fugard, Reza de Wet, Christopher Hampton, Christopher Durang, Yasmin Reza, David Auburn, Beth Henley and Shelagh Stephenson.
However, just as important is the creation of top-quality children’s theatre, staged with great care and attention to detail, with the intention of capturing the imagination of future theatre goers and fostering a love of the theatre amongst young people. To this end, KickstArt has staged hugely successful productions of such children’s classics as Winnie-the-Pooh, The Wizard of Oz and The Jungle Book, and has successfully revived the tradition of a family pantomime in Durban over the Christmas Season.
Regular KickstArt performers include Carol Trench, Clare Mortimer, Lisa Bobbert, Ntando Cele, Alison Cassells, Janna Ramos Violante, Jailoshini Naidoo, Vera Clare, Belinda Henwood, Josette Eales, Frances Currie, Neil Coppen, Iain Robinson, Bryan Hiles, Darren King, Peter Court, Michael Gritten, Rowan Bartlett, Marc Kay and Sean de Klerk.
KickstArt has also been lucky enough to successfully collaborate with fine artists and fashion designers Terrence Bray and Andrew Verster on several occasions.
"We were delighted to bring KickstArt to Grahamstown. The company is a wonderful model which demonstrates excellence, passion and a professional, business-like approach to the arts. Under Steven Stead's directorship and his talented company members, KickstArt is one of KwaZulu-Natal's real gems."
Ismail Mahomed, Director of the South African National Arts festival
"Durban loves them, they're perfect… and let's hope they never change cities, because Greg King and Steven Stead's award-winning KickstArt Theatre Company is as much an essential and cherished part of Surf City as dips in the Ocean, slides at uShaka and gliding up the Moses Mabhida Stadium arch."
